The 2006 ACC Champion Virginia women’s lacrosse team has been ranked in the top-10 in three preseason polls. The Cavaliers were slotted in the No. 2 spot by Lacrosse Magazine, the official publication of US Lacrosse, No. 7 in the Inside Lacrosse media poll, and No. 9 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association poll.

The Cavaliers are coming off a 15-4 campaign in 2006 that saw the team win the ACC Championship, their second in three years, and advance to the NCAA Championships for the 11th consecutive year. Second-year Blair Weymouth was named the National Rookie of the Year and was selected to the US National Developmental Women’s Lacrosse team in August. She returns, along with three teammates who were also named to the US squad: Jessy Morgan, Megan O’Malley, and Jen Holden.

The Hoos will travel to Durham, N.C. to compete in the South of the Border Tournament on Sunday, February 11. South of the Border is a playday for lacrosse teams; Virginia will scrimmage tournament host North Carolina, Duke and Davidson as part of the tournament. (Other teams participating include Ohio State, James Madison, and George Washington.) The Cavaliers return home to host ACC-rival Virginia Tech on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 7:00 pm. The winner of the game will earn one point for their school in the Commonwealth Challenge, the annual all-sports competition between the Cavaliers and the Hokies.
