Thirty-one years and two days after William & Mary met the Cavaliers on the field in Charlottesville in Virginia’s first-ever women’s lacrosse contest, these two rivals meet again in Charlottesville to resume one of the oldest series in women’s lacrosse in the south. Although the Tribe won that first game in 1976, the ‘Hoos currently enjoy a 23-17-1 advantage in the series and have won the last five. William & Mary and Virginia are two of the oldest programs in the south, the College is actually one of the oldest programs in the nation and is one of only seven schools currently playing at the Divison I level, including Virginia, that has played in over 500 games in school history. The two schools are also two of only nine schools in Division I that have over 300 wins.

The Cavaliers, as usual, feature one of the top defenses in the nation and are ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense. Virginia is led by Jessy Morgan and Jen Holden in line defense, while first-year defense wing Kaitlin Duff leads the team in both ground balls and draw controls. Kendall McBrearty ranks eighth in the nation in goals-against average at 7.54 GAA.

Virginia’s midfield has helped the Cavaliers rank ninth nationally in scoring margin, and with first-years Duff and Brittany Kalkstein leading UVa with 18 and 16 draw controls, respectively, the Cavaliers rank nationally in draw controls.

The Cavaliers offense, led by Kate Breslin, has scored in double-digits in six of Virginia’s games in 2007. Breslin and Blair Weymouth have notched a hat trick in four of the ‘Hoos games, with McCulloch leading the team with 11 assists. Breslin ranks third in the ACC in scoring; as a team Virginia ranks 18th nationally in scoring offense.

The game against William & Mary is slated for 7 pm in Klockner Stadium.
