The Virginia women’s lacrosse team dropped a tough 12 – 9 decision to No.15 Johns Hopkins today (April 14) in Baltimore. No.5 Virginia (11-3) was led offensively by Brittany Kalkstein (3g,1a) and Jess Wasilewski (3g). Jen Holden led the Hoos defensively with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Claire Bordley won the opening draw control and Virginia set up its attack. Megan Havrilla cut across the mouth of the cage and scored 50 seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead. Kadie Stamper won the draw for JHU and scored 39 seconds after Havrilla to tie the game. Wasilewski controlled the ensuing draw and the Cavaliers got the ball to Kalkstein, who drew a shooting space foul. The first-year converted the shot to put UVa up 2-1 three minutes into the game.

The No. 5/6 Cavaliers, ranked in the top six of all four major polls, take on the No. 15/16 Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins in a key south regional matchup at Homewood Field in Baltimore, Md. on Saturday, April 14 at noon. Virginia enters the game with an 11-2 record (2-2, ACC) against the nation’s fourth-toughest schedule as ranked by lacrossedraw.com. The Blue Jays (7-5, 0-1 ALC) have played the nation’s seventh-toughest schedule.

Virginia and Johns Hopkins have played just once in school history, in the 2005 NCAA first round in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers escaped with a 10-8 come-from-behind victory. In 2007, Virginia and Johns Hopkins have both faced Princeton, Georgetown and Maryland; the Cavaliers have won all three games (PU: 9-7, GU: 14-7; MD: 15-4) while the Blue Jays have lost all three games (PU: 10-11 ot; GU: 13-16; MD 15-22)

The Cavaliers rank 15th nationally in scoring offense (13 goals per game). Virginia is led by Kate Breslin, who has already hit career highs of 39 goals and 20 assists in her fourth-year. She ranks 14th nationally in points per game (4.53). In addition, she ranks 10th all-time in points and goals as a fourth-year and seventh in assists. Blair Weymouth, the 2006 National Rookie of the Year, ranks second on Virginia’s team with 33 goals and 16 assists for 49 points. She ranks seventh all-time at Virginia for scoring as a second-year, passing Breslin’s total of 48. Ashley McCulloch’s 17 assists is more than her total points from 2006; she ranks second on the team and seventh all-time in school history as a second-year.

After a very successful fall season, the Blue Ridge Lacrosse Club is gearing up for its summer season. The high school teams continued their growth as individuals and as a team and, significantly, went undefeated at the George Mason 7v7 tournament in November.

The BRLC Middle School club team saw its largest numbers ever last fall. Nancy Haws, head varsity coach at Western Albemarle, will be the head coach for our middle school program, and is looking forward to continuing to develop the youth program this summer.

Blue Ridge team member Katie Rotanz from Salem was recruited to play at Virginia Tech, and will be attending Tech in the fall. The BRLC, the Charlottesville Chapter of USLacrosse, and cville-lax.com congratulate Katie on her success and wish her the best of luck!

Virginia’s Brittany Kalkstein won nine draws in the game, leading the No. 6 Cavaliers to a 14-7 win over No. 9 Georgetown (7-4) in rainy Charlottesville. The ‘Hoos (11-2) controlled 17 of the 23 draws to gain valuable possessions as Virginia sent the fourth-year class off with a victory. Before the game the Virginia lacrosse program honored the Class of 2007 with a brief ceremony as the team got set to play its final regular-season game at home. Fourth-year Kate Breslin went out in style, scoring four goals and adding three assists; fourth-years Megan Havrilla, Kaitlin Swagart and Jess Wasilewski also scored, while fellow fourth-year Jessy Morgan helped the Virginia defense hold the Hoyas to four goals below their season average.

Kaitlin Duff won the opening draw and Virginia settled its offense before Kalkstein drove from the right of the cage, scoring at 28:33. The Hoyas won the draw but Kendall McBrearty made a pair of saves to keep Georgetown off the board, and Virginia transitioned the ball upfield where Breslin stuck back the rebound of her shot to put UVa up 2-0 just over four minutes into the game. Brittany Baschuk scored off an assist from Coco Stanwick three minutes later to cut the deficit in half for the Hoyas.

A missed catch by Georgetown was picked up by Kalkstein, and Virginia settled the ball before Breslin dumped the ball to a cutting Wasilewski to move the margin back to two. A goal circle violation by Georgetown gave the ball to McBrearty, and Virginia ran a fast break that saw Breslin dump the ball to Weymouth, who drove from the top and scored, putting UVa up 4-1. Jordan Trautman cut the deficit back to two four minutes later at 4-2.

The Cavalier women’s lacrosse team will host Georgetown on Wednesday, April 11 in a meeting of two South region teams both ranked in the top-10 nationally. The game is the final regular-season game to be played in Charlottesville, and prior to the game the program will honor the fourth-year class of Kate Breslin, Megan Havrilla, Jessy Morgan, Kaitlin Swagart, and Jess Wasilewski.

The No. 6 Cavaliers (10-2) boast the No. 8 scoring defense in the nation, allowing opponents just over eight goals a game (8.17). The No. 9 Hoyas (7-4) are almost as stingy, allowing opponents 8.55 goals per game. Both teams have faced tough schedules, with GU facing the No. 4 schedule in the nation and the Cavaliers facing the No. 6 schedule, according to lacrossedraw.com. Kendall McBrearty ranks eighth nationally in goals-against average, allowing 8.1 goals per game.

Virginia goalie Kip Turner has been named ACC Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week after guiding his team to two wins last week.

In last Tuesday’s 10-7 win over Binghamton, the senior from Annapolis, Md., made 11 saves, including six in the first quarter that kept the game tied 1-1. The visiting Bearcats built a 5-2 lead midway through the third quarter and took a 6-5 lead into the fourth quarter. Virginia opened the quarter with three quick goals to take an 8-6 lead. Binghamton had several chances to draw closer, but Turner recorded three saves in one 90-second flurry to keep the lead at two goals. Turner also corralled five ground balls in the winning effort.
