Charlottesville Summer Lacrosse League will begin play at Darden Towe Park on Sunday, June 19, 2011, with two game slots at noon and 1:15pm. Play will continue through the end of July on Sundays at noon and 1:15pm, and Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm.

Opening day rosters will be posted by noon Saturday June 18 and will be subject to change after the first week of play.

Registration remains open and should be sent directly to Doug Tarring at dtarring@stab.org. If you wish to play, please include your cell number, age, position, present playing status, school affiliation, or past experience. Players wanting to be assigned to the same team must list all names with the same information.

Payment is expected before players will be allowed to participate. In addition, if you register by email, please download and sign a registration form and bring it to the field with you.

A Note About Changes to the League From Doug Tarring:
I strongly encourage players to sign up early to help with the selection of teams. In the past seasons, we have had team leaders present rosters that are not filled with adequate numbers. The goal is to create a balanced, competitive league with a player pool of varsity high school players, college, club, and local players.

In order to do this, the teams this summer will be finalized after the first week of play. A player must have a completed application and the league fee. Players may play the first week yet may be assigned to a different team to keep the numbers per team by position equal. A schedule for the first week will be published with the team rosters of enrolled players. I want to continue having each team composed of players that are present our past teammates.

The Albemarle High School Boy’s lacrosse team’s run in the state playoffs came to an end Wednesday night as they fell to Chantilly 7-11. The Patriots were the final area team still in the playoffs.

AHS lead the game at the half 5-4, but Chantilly (21-1) opened the second half with a 5 goal spurt to pull away. Chantilly moves onto the State Finals, where they will face Langley who defeated Annandale in the other semifinal.

The defending state champion Western Albemarle Girls squad lost a tough matchup with Oakton 16-13 in the state quarterfinals. Despite a strong comeback, the Warriors could not climb out of a 14-6 hole early in the second half. The Jefferson District champion and Region champion Warriors end the season with a 17-3 record. The Albemarle High School Boy’s lacrosse team defeated Briar Woods in dramatic fashion to advance in the state playoffs. Trailing 6-1 at the half, the Patriots outscored Briar Woods 8-1 in the second for the victory. They advance to take on Chantilly in the State Semifinals Wednesday night at Westfield High School. UVA junior attackman Steele Stanwick was awarded lacrosse’s highest individual honor, the Tewaaraton Award, following the 2011 season. Stanwick is the third Cavalier to win the award, given to the nation’s top male collegiate lacrosse player.

Stanwick finished the season No. 3 in the nation with 2.24 assists per game and No. 4 in the nation with 4.12 points per game. The junior tallied 21 points (9 points, 12 assists) in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, leading Virginia to the program’s fifth all-time title. Stanwick was named to the All-NCAA Championship Tournament team. He also was the ACC Player of the Year and earned USILA first-team All-America accolades in 2011.

The University of Virginia Men’s lacrosse team won their 5th National Championship with a 9-7 over the Maryland Terrapins in front of over 35,000 fans in Baltimore. As a number 7 seed, the Cavs were the lowest seeded team to ever take home the title.

Following a slow start by both teams, UVA rode Colin Briggs to a 5-3 halftime lead. Briggs finished with 5 goals and took home Championship MVP honors.
