The Blue Ridge Lacrosse Officials Association is sponsoring the “Red, White, and Blue Ridge Play Day” for High School girls on Sunday, March 2nd, from 11:00am to 5:00pm. The cost for the day is $35 per participant, which includes a T-shirt.

Teams will be coached by members of the UVa Club team, and certified athletic trainers will be available on-site. Players can sign up on site, however, are encouraged to email Chip Rogers at chipr@virginia.edu. All participants must be members of USLacrosse.

There was the smell of an upset in the season opener for the Stony Brook men’s lacrosse team. Starting the season at #3 Virginia, the Seawolves came back from a slow start to tie things up after three quarters only to see the Cavaliers score a pair of goals in the final minutes to avoid the upset bid and escape with a 15-13 win. Danny Glading paced the Cavalier offense with a career-high five goals and three assists for eight total points, also a career best. Garrett Billings had his second three-goal game in a row.

Ryan Hughes tied his career high with four goals for Stony Brook, while freshman Jordan McBride also tallied four times.

Senior Ryan Hughes (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and freshman Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia) each scored four goals for Stony Brook.

“It wasn’t the start to the game that we were looking for,” remarked Stony Brook head coach Rick Sowell. “But once we settled down I was extremely proud of our effort.”

For the second year in a row, Virginia opened its season against a scappy Drexel team. This year, the Cavaliers managed to not only shut the door on the Dragons, but keep it shut. Virginia scored four straight second half goals to break a 6-6 tie as the third-ranked Cavaliers defeated No. 18 Drexel, 11-7, in front of an overflow crowd of 2500 at Vidas Field in Philadelphia.

Garrett Billings, who had three goals and seven points in the game, set up Gavin Gill for an extra-man goal three minutes into the third period to give Virginia a 7-6 lead. The Cavaliers would not trail again. Brian Carroll scored his third goal of the game on the man-up late in the third and Peter Lamade and Billings added goals early in the fourth to give the Cavaliers a 10-6 lead. Virginia’s extra-man offense was the key to the victory, as the unit was perfect in four attempts with a man advantage.

With the victory, the Cavaliers avenged last season’s season-opening loss when they fell to the Dragons on their home field.
