“The Herd” Posts Outstanding Performance in Inaugural Tournament Play
Over the weekend the Charlottesville menâ??s adult team, “The Herd”, made their first tournament trip to Laxtoberfest in Annapolis, MD. The team opened up in pool play with some big wins; the biggest was an overtime win over a Philly team made up of GMH players. The lone loss was to Black Banana by a score of 6-3. Of the 14 teams in the tournament, the Herd was seeded 3rd coming out of pool play with three wins.
In the semi finals, the Herd again had to face Black Banana. The Herd came out on fire taking a lead 2-0 early in the first. Black Banana came back against the Herd, down 4 players, in the second half. The final score was again 6-3. The Banana went on to win the tournament with the Herd coming in ranked 3rd.
The Herd’s defensive and goalie play were considered outstanding — over the course of two days, the Herd’s defense only gave up an average 3.5 goals per game against.
Three members of the Charlottesville lacrosse community were also at Laxtoberfest, playing in the master division. Chris Kabbash, Rodney Rullman and Jim Loffredo took the field for Team Toyota. Toyota breezed through pool play to secure 1st seed in the playoffs. They won a hard fought game in the semis over a team from Rochester NY, then they won convincingly in the finals by a 7-1 score.
The newly formed Charlottesville Girls Lacrosse Club Team, coached my Mary Blake and Karen Van Arsdale also had a great showing at the Laxtoberfest, finishing the weekend with a third place finish. Kate McCullough, (STAB) and Bridgett Lynn, (WAHS) led the team with goals. Kathleen Battle (STAB), Caroline Megargel (STAB) and Chelsea Staunton (STAB) dominated the mid field for the team.
