Virginia Completes “Face-Off Classic Trifecta”; Gets By Johns Hopkins 7-5

Ben Rubeor scored three goals to lead the Virginia men’s lacrosse team to a 7-5 victory over Johns Hopkins this afternoon at historic Homewood Field in Baltimore. With the win, the Cavalier’s defeated each of the other three teams participating in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Classic. Virginia beat Syracuse 11-8 at the Classic in Baltimore, then a week later, squeaked by Princeton 7-6 at home.
The Cavaliers’ win marks the first time since 2001 the visiting team won in the series; Virginia won in four overtimes in 2001.
Virginia won for the seventh time in a row to move to 7-1 this season, while the Blue Jays fall to 4-2.
Jake Byrne scored early in the opening quarter to give the homestanding Blue Jays a quick lead. The Cavaliers rallied with a four-goal run to take control. Rubeor and Danny Glading tallied twice as Virginia gained a lead it would not relinquish.
Paul Rabil scored at the 5:30 mark of the second quarter to draw Johns Hopkins to within 4-2, but Virginia’s Will Barrow scored a fast break goal late in the quarter to give Virginia 5-2 lead at halftime.
Virginia continued to dominate possession in the third quarter. Freshman Brian Carroll ended a four-game scoring drought with his fourth goal of the season at the 4:44 mark of the third quarter. Rubeor notched his third of the afternoon with six second left in the quarter as UVa took a 7-2 lead into the final period.
The Blue Jays, who took 16 of their 30 shots in the final quarter, scored three times but were unable to overtake Virginia.
Kip Turner was outstanding in goal for Virginia with seven saves, including two point blank stops.
Matt Kelly held Johns Hopkins’ leading scorer Steven Boyle to a lone assist and forced him to misfire on all five shots.
