Despite a total of 5 goals in the final quarter from Navyâ??s David King, Andreas Gaynor, and Kevin Mahoney, combined with 7 saves in the frame by Mike Massero, Maroon held on to win the 2007 Charlottesville Summer Lacrosse League Championship 13-12. As Navy relentlessly chipped away at Maroonâ??s lead, Virginiaâ??s Steve Giononne shut the door late in the game with a shot past Massaro that preserved the win — and the Championship — for Maroon.
Maroon’s offense seemed to be powered by the University of Virginia. Former Cavalier Will Quayle led the scoring with 5 points (2 goals/3 assists), while current UVa players Will Barrow (4 goals) and Steve Giononne (2 goals) added another 6. Maroon’s Andreas Gaynor matched up Quayle with 5 points (3 goals/2 assists).
Both goalies were nonplussed by the offensive firepower. Maroon’s David Schnur tallied 13 stops; Massero made 17.
