Despite a total of 5 goals in the final quarter from Navy’s David King, Andreas Gaynor, and Kevin Mahoney, combined with 7 saves in the frame by Mike Massero, Maroon held on to win the 2007 Charlottesville Summer Lacrosse League Championship 13-12. As Navy relentlessly chipped away at Maroon’s lead, Virginia’s Steve Giononne shut the door late in the game with a shot past Massaro that preserved the win — and the Championship — for Maroon.

Maroon’s offense seemed to be powered by the University of Virginia. Former Cavalier Will Quayle led the scoring with 5 points (2 goals/3 assists), while current UVa players Will Barrow (4 goals) and Steve Giononne (2 goals) added another 6. Maroon’s Andreas Gaynor matched up Quayle with 5 points (3 goals/2 assists).

Both goalies were nonplussed by the offensive firepower. Maroon’s David Schnur tallied 13 stops; Massero made 17.

Despite trailing virtually the entire game, Navy’s defense shut the door in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s CSLL semifinal, setting the stage for a game-winning shot with :35 on the clock which moved Navy into the finals of the CSLL tournament. Red’s offense — which seemed unstoppable in the first half — only managed hit the back of the net once in the final frame, and even that was nullified by a crease violation.

Navy will take on Maroon for the Championship of the Charlottesville Summer Lacrosse League at the STAB Turf Field on Thursday evening. Game time is 7:00pm.

Battling back from a 6-4 halftime deficit, Maroon used a 5 goal surge in the third quarter of the Charlottesville Summer Lacrosse League’s first semifinal game to down defending Champions Green. After Maroon pulled ahead late in the third, the teams traded goals despite outstanding goalie play from both Green’s Grant White and Maroon’s David Schnur.

Playoff action continues tonight on the STAB Turf Field where top-seed Red takes on Navy at 6:30pm.

The Charlottesville Summer Lacrosse League playoffs continue tonight with a matchup between defending Champions Green (6-4) and Maroon (6-4). The game will be played at 6:30pm at the St. Anne’s - Belfield Turf Field, just off of the US 250 bypass. (For directions, click here.)

In the play-in game Sunday, Navy Blue defeated Royal Blue 12-7. Navy takes on top seed Red Tuesday evening at the STAB Turf Field. Game time is 6:30pm.

Updated 5:15pm While there is a threat of thunderstorms around game time, as of this update, tonight’s Red v. Maroon is planned to be played as scheduled. This is, of course, subject to change as conditions warrent. For further updates, please call the CSLL Weather Hotline — 434.220.4200 — after 6:00pm.

Updated 6:00pm Tonight’s Seminole Lacrosse League Boy’s Practice wil be held as scheduled.

Sometimes, a player puts his stick in the closet, then finds reasons for it to stay there. Now, there’s a reason to dust that stick off.

This Sunday, July 15th, will be the inaugural meeting of what, for lack of a better name, is being called the “Old Men’s Lacrosse Pick Up League”. This informal league is for players aged 35 and older. There will be no set teams, and given the busy nature of most people’s schedules, a “come when you can, leave when you have to” rule will be in place.

The games will begin at 4:00pm at Darden Towe Park. After picks, teams will play one game of 12 minute running quarters, take a rest break for a half hour. “Surviving” players will play another game with the teams shuffled. “Sane”, controlled contact will be allowed, however, uncontrolled or dangerous contact is strictly forbidden.

The current plan is to continue play on Sundays through the Fall, however, that is subject to change based on the majority of players’ schedules. There is no cost to play, however, membership in USLacrosse is strongly encouraged. (Note for the weak-of-heart: USLacrosse membership includes a comprehensive lacrosse insurance program for a full year!)

Players planning to participate should show up at Darden Towe Park between 3:30 and 4:00pm. If you have a pinneys or a favorite jersey, please bring that to the field with you along with your equipment. Updated 5:00pm The Charlottesville Summer Lacrosse League has been carefully monitoring this afternoon’s weather situation. While several lines of rainfall have moved through the area today, none have been associated with severe weather. Additionally, projections based on real-time radar indicate that the weather should clear by game time tonight.

Therefore, tonight’s Red v. Navy game will be played as planned.

On Thursday, June 28, 2007, two Charlottesville Summer Lacrosse League games were postponed due to the threat of severe thunderstorms. These games will be made up on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

The Green v. Maroon game will be played Tuesday, July 10 at 6:30pm.

The Red v. Navy game will be played Wednesday, July 11 at 6:30pm.
